Minister Outlines Measures for Good Mental Health in Workplaces

Phnom Penh, October 15, 2024 --The Minister of Health has marked World Mental Health Day (Oct. 10), underlining practical measures to address mental health in the workplace for higher productivity.Addressing over 500 participants in an official event in Phnom Penh on Oct. 14, the minister, H.E. Chheang Ra, called on all relevant ministries, other government institutions, development partners, and other players to signify the importance of staff's mental health that intertwines physical condition and effective job fulfillment.To do so, he encouraged stress management for both employees and employers, the application of a mental health screening tool to self-assess mental health status, and the introduction of stress management guidelines at the workplace.The minister added that it is also essential to enable access to mental health counselling services for the management and staff.The Ministry of Health organised the event to mark World Mental Health Day in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, the World Health Organisation, and UNICEF.Some 549 senior representatives from the mentioned agencies and other relevant bodies, as well as psychiatrists, mental health professionals, university students, and other national and international participants, gathered at the event.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet Promotes Khmer Mixed Martial Arts to New Height

Phnom Penh, October 14, 2024 --With the Samdech Thipadei Award for Khmer Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championships to happen next week, the Cambodian Prime Minister has recently formulated a commission for extensive research and study of the roots of all Khmer martial arts for conservation purposes.According to the decision made by the Royal Government of Cambodia led by Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, the study and research could stretch beyond Cambodian territory to areas that used to be under the administration of the former Khmer Empire. They include Kampuchea Krom in Vietnam as well as other regions currently belonging to Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand.H.E. Vath Chamroeun, Permanent Vice Chair of the Commission for Organising the MMA Championships, supported the initiative that he believes will bring about a clear understanding of the history of Khmer martial arts for generations to come.The vice chair also plans to propose to the government a ten-year title of 'King of Khmer Martial Art Fighters' for the winner of the championships to further encourage more participation in the sport.H.E. Media Asked to Report MGI Incident with Greater Care

Cambodia, China Agree to Foster Cooperation in Clean Energy and Connectivity

NBC Warns against Illegal Loans

Phnom Penh, October 09, 2024 --The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has warned the public against the use of illegal loan services, emphasising the potential for financial losses and significant risks.In a press conference held on Tuesday, NBC Governor H.E. Dr. Chea Serey highlighted the dangers associated with borrowing from unlicensed lenders, noting that such practices often involve exorbitant interest rates, hidden fees, and deceptive terms and conditions.These factors can lead to a cycle of debt that is difficult to escape, resulting in substantial financial hardship for borrowers, she said.“People should be careful because during this period, there are many people who take the opportunity when they go to borrow from banks, they turn to borrowing from the unregulated borrowers,” she added.NBC recommended that individuals only borrow from reputable financial institutions that are licensed and regulated, H.E. Dr. Chea Serey advised.The NBC's warning comes in response to a growing concern about the prevalence of illegal lending activities in Cambodia on social networks – Facebook, Telegram, and TikTok.NBC advised individuals to carefully review loan contracts and understand all the terms and conditions before signing any agreements.It also encouraged borrowers to report any suspicious or fraudulent lending activities to the appropriate authorities.Outstanding loans increased by 2.6 percent year-on-year to US$58.9 billion by June this year, while customers' deposits rose by 13.4 percent to US$51.9 billion, according to the NBC’s biannual report released in July.The loans had been given to main sectors such as trade, housing, construction and real estate, agriculture, hotels and restaurants, and manufacturing, among others, it said.Non-performing loans (NPLs) at the banks and the microfinance institutions were at controllable rates of 6.8 percent and 8.3 percent, respectively, it added.The report said the current assets in the Kingdom's banking and financial system rose to US$88.3 billion by June 2024, up 6.1 percent from June 2023.

MIRARTH Expands Cashew Processing, Explores Biomass Fuel Production

New World Bank Supported Project Will Improve the Quality of Thousands of Students in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, September 25, 2024 --  The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved US$80 million in financing on Monday to support Cambodia’s efforts to improve the quality of higher education and research, mainly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).According to a World Bank’s press release on Sept. 24, funding for the project comes from the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s concessional lending arm for low-income countries. This six-year project will support the efforts of nine public institutions of higher education to develop well-qualified graduates and research products that contribute to the country’s economic development. Some 32,000 students—including about 13,000 women—will benefit from its activities, which will include updating curricula, training lecturers, and digitising the delivery of education.The project places strong emphasis on improving the quality of learning for female students and students with disabilities and on supporting female faculty members. It adopts climate-resilient infrastructure design standards and prioritises climate change–related research projects. “To complement investments in health and basic education, which are the foundations for a productive workforce, strengthening high-quality higher education and preparing a critical mass of highly skilled graduates will help Cambodia advance its human capital and promote inclusive growth and development,” said Tania Meyer, World Bank Country Manager for Cambodia. Although access to higher education has gradually increased, improvements in the quality and relevance of education and research are essential for building Cambodia's capacity to meet the evolving needs of the labour market in a rapidly changing environment.This project will build on the successes of and lessons learned from an ongoing project that has enhanced learning opportunities for over 128,000 higher education students in Cambodia—over half of them women—by establishing 67 academic programmes, funding 53 research projects, and establishing or renovating147 laboratories.

Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), made the request while he was receiving a Thai delegation led by Ms. Patcharada Nawakawongkarn, Executive Director of Thai Enterprise Development Division of Thailand BOI, at the CDC’s headquarters in Phnom Penh on Sept. 18.The delegation, composed of representatives from the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Thai private sector, has been on a visit to Cambodia to learn more about the Kingdom’s investment potential and opportunities.The CDC first vice president briefed his guests about Cambodia’s key progress in private investment affairs, under the CDC’s facilitation, and laid stress on the country’s favourable investment environment such as full peace, political and macroeconomic stability, as well as law on investment, investment incentives, and interconnected physical infrastructure.In reply, Ms. Patcharada Nawakawongkarn promised to consider the aforementioned request, and was highly optimistic about the close collaboration in organising business matching forum between Cambodia and Thailand to boost mutual investment, particularly to encourage more Thai investors to invest in Cambodia.

Documentary on Rubber Tree Origin in Cambodia Released

Phnom Penh, September 18, 2024 --The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries has released a video documentary on the origin of rubber trees in Cambodia, dating back over 100 years.According to the spokesperson at the ministry H.E. Ms. Im Rachana, the ministry's effort to promote public knowledge on Cambodia's agriculture will be followed by more documentaries to be publicised in the future.Based on the released video documentary, a French national named Boulliard brought the first rubber trees to Cambodia in 1910 and started growing them in an area now belonging to Preah Sihanouk province.As time progressed, large-scale rubber plantations were operated by five French investment companies in the provinces of Kampong Cham/Thbong Khmum, Kratie, and Rattanakiri of Cambodia.The documentary also introduced the audience to the oldest rubber plantation in Cambodia located in Chub commune, Thbong Khmum district, Thbong Khmum province.With 448 first-generation rubber trees standing there, the 14-hectare plantation could be one of the plantations with the largest number of surviving old rubber trees in the world.This plantation is now serving as a research facility to breed cost-effective varieties of rubber trees for Cambodia.H.E. Ms. Im Rachana said that after this video, the next one on Cambodia's future industrial crops will be released on Sept. 19.

Cambodia Rejects Any Interpretation about Sweden Section Office’s Closure for Political Purposes

Phnom Penh, September 17, 2024 —The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has issued a statement clarifying the reason of the closure of the Sweden Section Office in Phnom Penh.In March 2024, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs notified the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the closure of the Sweden Section Office in Phnom Penh, from 30 September 2024, said the statement AKP received this morning.The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs indicated that the Swedish Government has made this decision in a reprioritisation effort to focus on economic development, peace, and security in its neighbouring countries, in response to the global paradigm shift following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, the source underlined.“As stated above, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation would like to reject any attempts to interpret the case of the closure of the Sweden Section Office in Phnom Penh for political purposes,” concluded the statement.
