Some US$238 Million Allocated to Support Rice Sector in Almost a Decade

Phnom Penh, January 16, 2025 --The Royal Government has so far allocated about US$238 million via the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank (ARDB) to support the rice sector development and maintain the rice price stability.The figure was shared by H.E. Kao Thach, Director General of ARDB, at a press conference on the “Rice Price and Dry-Season Rice Harvest,” held here at the Office of the Council of Ministers on the afternoon of Jan. 15.Of the total amount, he added, some US$208 million was allocated between September 2016 and March 2024, while US$30 million on Jan. 15, 2025.This special fund is part of the Royal Government’s intervention to solve the challenges faced by rice farmers across the country.Concerning the rice prices, H.E. Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, told the press conference that not all rice varieties face the falling prices. The price of fragrant rice remains high, i.e. 1,350 Riel (1 U.S. dollar equals to 4,000 Riel) per kilogramme, but that of non-fragrant rice such as OM is dropping rapidly, he said.Before the end of 2024, H.E. Minister pointed out, the OM rice variety could be sold at over 1,200 Riel per kilogramme on average, but the price keeps falling to 1,000 Riel or even 800 Riel in January.Neighbouring Vietnam is experiencing the same problem, he said, adding that the price of OM rice has dropped by 30 percent from US$660 to US$430 per tonne.H.E. Dith Tina thus called on farmers to join modern agricultural communities that can help them access low-interest loans and wider market.

Employment and Investment Growth in 2024 Reflect Cambodia’s Political and Economic Stability

Phnom Penh, January 15, 2025 --With the approval of investment projects by the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), which could create approximately 320,000 jobs across over 400 projects throughout 2024, it is the positive sign of Cambodia’s economy and political stability under the leadership of the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC).Dr. Chheang Vannarith, Founder and Chairman of Angkor Social Innovation Park (ASIP), highlighted that the achievements in 2024, in which the RGC of the 7th legislature of the National Assembly, through the CDC, approved hundreds of investment projects and created tens of thousands of jobs, are a positive indicator of both economic factor and the confidence and trust of foreign investors in Cambodia.“The surge in investment activities, particularly in the industrial sector, creating jobs for locals, reflects Cambodia’s economy and political stability under the leadership of the RGC of the 7th legislature of the National Assembly,” he said.The RGC has launched vocational and technical training for 1.5 million people, especially young people from poor and vulnerable families. This allow citizens and young people in Cambodia to have at least one skill for their lives and strengthen their skills in line with the Cambodian economic context, he added.Dr. Chheang Vannarith further emphasised that although Cambodia has a good investment growth in 2024, the country still needs to do more to invest in other sectors, especially in infrastructure development, human resource development, and to promote investment at the national and provincial levels.The CDC approved 414 investment projects, including 387 new investment projects and 27 production expansion projects, with a total investment capital of approximately US$6.9 billion, generating nearly 320,000 jobs.The industrial sector continued to be the most prominent sector, absorbing 394 investment projects, equivalent to approximately 95 percent of the total number of investment projects, while the investment capital in this sector was approximately US$4.8 billion, contributing 69 percent of the total investment capital, up about 110 percent compared to 2023.

New Special Economic Zone Launched in Sihanoukville

Phnom Penh: Cambodia's total trade volume (exports and imports) in 2024 increased by nearly 17%, reflecting a robust economy and the growing international trade relations.According to data released by the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia on January 10, 2025, the total trade volume of Cambodia reached 54.74 billion USD in 2024, an increase of 16.9% from 46.82 billion USD in 2023.The same data also showed that from January to December 2024, Cambodia exported goods worth approximately 26.19 billion USD, up by 15.7%, while imports of various goods amounted to 28.54 billion USD, an increase of 18% compared to 2023.Key trading partners of Cambodia include China, the United States, the European Union, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, Canada, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom. However, the United States remains Cambodia's largest export market, followed by the European Union, Vietnam, and China.Additionally, Cambodia benefits from various trade agreements, including being a member of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA), which have facilitated access to larger markets and reduced customs duties.This trade growth is the result of the government's efforts to expand export markets and encourage investment. Moreover, the Cambodian government has adopted a trade policy as a strategy for integration into regional and global trade networks.Furthermore, this trade growth also reflects the improving domestic production cycle and the resilience of Cambodia's economy, as well as the growing economies of Cambodia's key trading partners, such as the United States, China, some European Union countries, and ASEAN members.Key exports of Cambodia include garments, footwear, travel goods, agricultural products like rice, cashews, cassava, and rubber, furniture, automotive parts, solar panels, bicycles, electrical materials, electronic components, and vehicle parts.On the other hand, Cambodia's key imports include raw materials for the garment industry, fuel, electronics, vehicles and machinery, construction materials, consumer goods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and medical equipment.

Chinese Firms Looking to Expand Businesses in Aviation Sector to Cambodia

Trade through Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone in Cambodia Hits Record High in 2024

Phnom Penh, January 08, 2025 —The value of imports and exports passing through the Sihanoukville Special Economy Zone (SSEZ) in Cambodia hit a record high in 2024, said Cambodia's customs data released on Monday.The total trade volume of the enterprises in the SSEZ reached US$4.07 billion last year, a year-on-year increase of 21.3 percent, the data showed.Jointly ventured by Cambodian and Chinese investors, the SSEZ is a flagship project under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).The SSEZ operator said in a news release that in 2024, the zone featured high-quality development and promoted the integration of industry and city.The news release said the construction of the SSEZ 2.0 upgraded version has taken a big step to a new level.The 11-square-kilometre SSEZ had attracted 28 new enterprises in 2024, bringing the total number of enterprises in the zone to 202, with approximately 32,000 jobs created, the news release said.Those enterprises came from China, European countries, the United States, and Southeast Asian countries, among other countries and regions."The SSEZ has injected new momentum into enriching the China-Cambodia Diamond Hexagon cooperation framework and building Cambodia's Industrial Development Corridor," the news release said.Mr. Neak Chandarith, Director of the Cambodia 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Research Centre said the SSEZ is situated near the deep-water Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, which is very convenient for trade exchanges between Cambodia and the rest of the world."This economic zone has contributed to boosting Cambodia's economic growth and generating a lot of jobs for locals," he told Xinhua."The SSEZ, together with other flagship BRI projects, has been playing a crucial role in helping Cambodia achieve its ambitious goals of becoming an upper-middle income country by 2030 and a high-income nation by 2050."Mr. Seun Sam, a policy analyst at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said the SSEZ is one of the key catalysts for Cambodia's economic growth and trade development."The SSEZ is one of the most impressive outcomes of the BRI projects in Cambodia," he told Xinhua. Cambodia, Indonesia Pleased with Bilateral Ties

Over 500 Orchid Species Preserved and Researched

Phnom Penh, January 03, 2025 --Over 500 species of orchids are being preserved, researched, and promoted by the Kesor Kol Sok An Phnom Kulen Research and Conservation Centre in Banteay Srei district, Siem Reap province of Cambodia.According to the Forestry Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the research of the plant has been run for decades through the administration's cooperation with development partners.The work contributes to a noticeable expansion of the orchid species for conservation and attracting more and more researchers, students, and development partners.Cambodia has established the Kesor Kol Sok An Phnom Kulen Research and Conservation Centre to preserve orchid seeds, and so far the centre has collected some 5,000 samples from Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kampot, Preah Vihear, and Siem Reap provinces.The centre has estimated that Cambodia might have between 500 and 1,000 species of orchids.

NBC Issues Prakas for Cryptoasset Transactions

Phnom Penh, December 27, 2024 --The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) on Dec. 26 issued a Prakas outlining the licensing requirements for institutions and entities engaging in cryptoasset transactions.The Prakas, composed of 6 chapters and 26 articles, applies to all Commercial Banks and Payment Service Institutions, under the purview of the NBC supervisory authority, intending to have cryptoasset exposures and/or to provide cryptoasset service as cryptoasset service providers (CASPs).The Prakas classifies cryptoassets into two groups - Group 1 and Group 2.Group 1 consists of cryptoassets that are digital representation of traditional financial instruments or the value of which refers to traditional assets or to a pool of traditional assets known as reference assets.Group 2 includes all cryptoassets that do not meet the criteria of Group 1, in particular, but not limited to, unbacked cryptoassets that are neither tokenised traditional assets nor stablecoins.Any commercial bank or payment services institution wishing to offer or involve the conduct of one or more of the services as stipulated in Article 20 shall obtain prior authorisation from the NBC.Any entity wishing to operate as CASPs on one or more of the services as stipulated in Article 20 shall obtain a licence from the NBC.The Prakas provides a framework for institutions and entities to operate within the legal boundaries while mitigating potential risks associated with cryptoasset transactions.“The purpose of this Prakas is to manage the transactions and business activities related to cryptoassets in accordance with Article 2 to 4 of the Law on Banking and Financial Institutions,” NBC said.Commercial banks, payment services institutions, and licensed CASPs failing to comply with this Prakas shall be penalised according to Article 52 of the Law on Banking and Financial Institutions.

Phnom Penh, December 27, 2024 --A total of 2,009 tourists of 50 different nationalities, 1,072 of whom are women, on board of "NOORDAM" cruise ship are paying a day-long visit to Sihanoukville of Preah Sihanouk province.The 285.43-metre-long, 32.25-metre-wide and 8-metre-deep cruise ship sailing under the flag of the Netherlands docked at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port this morning.According to Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, most of the tourists are American (614), Australian (429) and Canadian (179). They visited cultural resorts, beaches and other tourist attractions in the Preah Sihanouk coastal province. 16 of them left for a visit to Angkor temples in Siem Reap province.Coming from Thailand, the cruise ship with 769 crewmembers of 37 different nationalities, of them 141 are women, will depart for Vietnam this evening, around 9:00, the source added.Since the beginning of this year, more and more tourism vessels bringing along thousands of multinational tourists and crewmembers visited Cambodia via the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.Tourism is a priority sector in promoting Cambodia’s macroeconomic growth and social development and is expected to take up the biggest part in the country's GDP in the near future.

Phnom Penh, December 27, 2024 --Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn, received a courtesy call by H.E. Anatoly Borovik, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Cambodia, at the ministry here on Dec. 26.According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, during this meeting, H.E. Prak Sokhonn commended Ambassador Borovik for his active role in strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Russia, and agreed with the envoy on the importance of maintaining regular high-level engagements and good cooperation across various fields, in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks.The Cambodian top diplomat expressed high appreciation for the existing fruitful cooperation in sectors, such as education, culture, health, as well as people-to-people exchange, and encouraged Ambassador Borovik to explore opportunities to promote economic ties between the two countries.The discussions also covered the possible convening of the Cambodia-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation (JGC) and the Bilateral Consultations between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs.H.E. Deputy Prime Minister and Ambassador Borovik also touched on some regional and international issues of common interests.
