The number of registered electric vehicles in Cambodia will increase to 1,335 units by 2023, an increase of more than 82%

Phnom Penh: As of the end of 2023, a total of 1,335 electric vehicles (EVs) have been registered in Cambodia and 18 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations have been built and put into operation throughout country.This statement was made by Mr. Peng Por Nea, Minister of Public Works and Transport at the opening ceremony of the meeting to summarize the work results in 2023 and set the direction for 2024 under the theme "Strengthening the development of human resources, construction quality, infrastructure, law-making standards and provision of services and use of technology and digital "at the Ministry on February 28, 2024.The Minister stated that in 2023, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport registered a total of 652,163 vehicles, including 604 electric vehicles (EV).Minister Peng Ponna said that from 1990 to December 2023, a total of 7,563,396 vehicles were registered, including 1,335 registered electric vehicles (EVs). The ministry has also built and commissioned 18 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.Although the current number of electric vehicles in Cambodia is small, the trend of using this type of vehicle is growing rapidly, as the number of registered electric vehicles will be only two in 2020 and increase up to 731 units in 2022. This figure is an increase of 82.62% compared to 2023 with 1,335 units. Cambodia is pushing for more use of electric vehicles, while petrol-powered vehicles, on average, are taxed at 120 percent, while electric vehicles are taxed at 60 percent. The state encourages a 50 percent discount on the tax rate.

Cambodia Records 3rd Dolphin Calf In 2024

Phnom Penh, February 29, 2024 --Another dolphin calf has been found, said the Fisheries Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in a news release this morning, stressing that this is the third dolphin calf registered in Cambodia in 2024.The newborn dolphin was spotted swimming with a herd of six other dolphins at 10:25 am on Feb. 23 at Anlong Preah Sang pool in Sambok village, Sambok commune, Chetr Borei district, Kratie province by the research team of the Fisheries Administration and WWF-Cambodia.Last year, eight dolphin calves were counted, up from six each in 2022 and 2021.The Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) are a living natural treasure of Cambodia and are fully protected under the Kingdom’s Fisheries Law. The population is ranked as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, the highest international threat ranking for endangered species.According to WWF-Cambodia, the presence of the dolphin in the Mekong is an indication of healthy fisheries and healthy rivers, including biodiversity and natural ecosystems that provide life-support services for people.

US$760,000 For Cambodia's Early Childhood Education And Health Projects

Phnom Penh, February 28, 2024 --The Government of Japan has donated US$768,627 for the implementation of early childhood education and medical cooperation activities in Cambodia.The grant awards, under the framework of the Japanese Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects, were officially signed on Feb. 26 between Mr. Taninai Ichitomo, Chargés d'Affaires ad interim, Embassy of Japan in Cambodia, and representatives of the recipient organisations.According to a press release from the Embassy of Japan, US$160,140 was awarded to the Nature Centre Risen (NCR) to implement the Empowering Early Childhood Environmental Education project in Preah Sihanouk province.Some US$414,756 was given to the Shanti Volunteer Association (SVA) to implement “Improve the access and quality of early childhood education in the public preschools in Oddar Meanchey ‘province.”The rest, US$193,731 was donated to the Foundation for International Development and Relief (FIDR) to implement the “Project to Promote Regional Medical Cooperation System in Northeastern Cambodia through Strengthening Surgical Practice.”The release highlighted the embassy's optimism that the grant assistance will further improve the quality of life for people in the project areas.

5th Senate Election Held In Free And Fair Manner, Says NEC

Phnom Penh, February 25, 2024 --The 5th Senate Election 2024 was conducted on Feb. 25 smoothly in a free and fair manner, affirmed H.E. Prach Chan, Chairman of the National Election Committee (NEC).At a dissemination meeting with stakeholders on the election’s general situation at the NEC’s headquarters here this evening, H.E. Prach Chan said that 11,730 out of the 11,747 eligible voters or 99.8 percent, went to vote at the 33 polling stations in the eight regional constituencies throughout Cambodia.This non-universal suffrage was held under the witness of 228 political parties’ observers, 760 local observers from 18 associations and NGOs, 30 foreign observers and 306 journalists, including 25 foreign journalists from 14 media organisations, he pointed out. “The preliminary results are expected to be released on Feb. 29, while the official ones will be around Mar. 4 to 6, 2024,” he underlined. According to unofficial results, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won a landslide victory.Besides CPP, other three political parties, namely the Khmer Will Party, the FUNCINPEC Party, and the National Power Party, also competed for 58 among the 62 seats at the Senate, while two of the remaining seats will be appointed by His Majesty the King and the other two by the National Assembly.The 4th Senate Election took place in 2018, during which CPP won all the 58 seats.The Senate of Cambodia was established on Mar. 25, 1999 with 61 senators. At that time, the senate members were appointed, not by election, of them 33 were from the CPP, 21 from the FUNCINPEC Party and seven from the Sam Rainsy Party.

Over 310 Multi-National Tourists Visit Preah Sihanouk Coastal Province

Phnom Penh, February 19, 2024 --"Crystal Symphony" cruise ship with 313 tourists of 25 different nationalities on board, 154 of whom are women, has paid a day-long visit to Preah Sihanouk province.The 238.01-metre-long, 30.20-metre-wide cruise ship sailing under the flag of Bahamas docked at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port on Feb. 18.According to Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, most of the tourists are American (193) and British (24). 25 of the tourists continued their trip to Siem Reap cultural province to visit Angkor temples, while the rest visited cultural resorts, beaches and other tourist attractions in the Preah Sihanouk coastal province.Coming from Thailand, the cruise ship with 443 crewmembers of 49 different nationalities, of them 96 are women, departed Sihanoukville for Vietnam in the evening of the same day, said the same source.Since early this year, more and more vessels bringing along thousands of multinational tourists and crewmembers visited Cambodia via the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

Phnom Penh, February 19, 2024 --Chak Angre Krom-Prek Pra Concrete Bridge worth some US$60 million was broken ground for construction here this morning under the presidency of Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia.H.E. Wang Wentian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Cambodia, were also present at the groundbreaking ceremony.According to H.E. Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, the 845,70-metre-long and 27-metre-wide bridge which connects Khan Meanchey to Khan Chbar Ampov in Phnom Penh and the connecting roads with a total length of 804.30 metres will be constructed by Shanghai Construction (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. for an expected duration of 42 months using a concessional loan from China.Once constructed, the bridge will ease the people’s travel, especially reduce traffic congestion on Preah Monivong Bridges, he underlined.The Chak Angre Krom-Prek Pra Bridge will become the eighth bridge across rivers in the capital. The other seven already in operation include Cambodia-Japan Chroy Changvar Friendship Bridge, Cambodia-China Chroy Changvar Friendship Bridge, Preah Monivong Bridge (1), Preah Monivong Bridge (2), Prek Pnov Bridge, Russey Keo cable-stayed Bridge, and Koh Pich-Koh Norea cable-stayed Bridge.

Cambodia, Thailand Speak Highly Of Naval Cooperation

Phnom Penh, February 16, 2024 --Cambodia and Thailand spoke highly of the good cooperation in the naval sector between the two countries.The mutual appreciation was exchanged in a recent meeting between Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence H.E. Gen. Tea Seiha and H.E. Admiral Adung Phan-iam, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) in Phnom Penh.H.E. Gen. Tea Seiha welcomed the visit of H.E. Admiral Adung Phan-iam in Cambodia and highlighted the intimate bilateral naval cooperation so far.In a recent visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet to Thailand, both Prime Ministers were committed to further increasing cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand, emphasised H.E. Gen. Tea Seiha.The deputy prime minister asked the Thai side to continue strengthening and expanding the cooperation on human resource training and the exchange of exposure visits among the two countries' navies.H.E. Admiral Adung Phan-iam thanked Cambodia for its warm hospitality to the Thai delegation, agreeing with the requests of the Cambodian side to advance naval cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
