Phnom Penh, March 22, 2024 --The Ministry of Health and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have discussed more cooperation in the health sector.The discussion took place between H.E. Chheang Ra, Minister of Health, and H.E. Liu Hua, Deputy Director General of the IAEA, in a meeting in Phnom Penh on Mar. 20.H.E. Chheang Ra appreciated the IAEA for supporting Cambodia's national health sector, especially the fight against cancer.The minister requested the IAEA to consider assisting Cambodia in expanding her health infrastructure, human resources training, and equipment.He also highlighted Cambodia's need for a safety system and regulation for the storage of dangerous waste from both the public and private sectors.H.E. Liu Hua was committed to contributing to the ministry's efforts to achieve the establishment of the National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) and the implementation of a health action plan.

Cambodia Sees Increase Of Foreign Tourist Arrivals In January-February

Phnom Penh, March 21, 2024 --Cambodia welcomed 988,574 international tourists in the first two months of 2024, up 18 percent over the same period last year, a Ministry of Tourism’s report showed on Mar. 21.Thailand topped the sources of international arrivals, with 247,530, followed by Vietnam and China, with 185,385 and 109,990, respectively.Some 42 percent of the total foreign tourists entered the country by air, up 33 percent.Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy, in addition to garment, footwear, and travel goods export, agriculture, and construction, and real estate.Number of Cambodian outbound tourists decreased by 3.9 percent to 262,580 during the two-month period, read the report.The ministry reported the number of domestic tourist movement at 3.58 million, an 84 percent increase year-on-year. 813,813 of them were domestic foreign tourists.Cambodia is well known for its world cultural heritage sites, namely the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province, the Preah Vihear Temple and Koh Ker Temple in Preah Vihear province, and the Sambor Prei Kuk Archaeological Site in Kampong Thom province.Besides, the Kingdom has a 450-kilometre-long pristine coastline stretching across four southwestern provinces of Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep and Koh Kong.Ministry of Tourism predicted that Cambodia would attract about 7 million international visitors to Cambodia by 2025, surpassing the pre-COVID-19 pandemic of 6.6 million in 2019.

Phnom Penh, March 21, 2024 --On the 44th anniversary of its reintroduction, Cambodian banknote Riel sees noticeable confidence in its, while more measures are being taken to sustainably 'Rielise' in Cambodia.At an official event to mark the Riel reintroduction anniversary, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) H.E. Dr. Chea Serey reported that the Riel circulation in the Cambodian market has increased by an average of 15 percent in the last two decades.Loans and deposits at banks and financial institutions have grown remarkably at 35 percent and 30 percent, respectively.The NBC governor added that it needs time to build confidence in Riel both among the locals and investors.To bring the use of Riel to a new height, NBC has promoted the use of electronic payment, especially through the well-known Khmer-introduced Bakong system, resulting in a 44 percent increase in 2023 compared to 2022, while such transactions rose only 3.1 percent for U.S. dollars.Cambodia has also connected the electronic payment system in Riel with Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam and will expand it to more territories in the near future.NBC, continued H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, has also been building public awareness of the importance of using the Riel, including the establishment of Cambodia's first ever museum of economy and money, widely referred to as the Sosoro Museum in Phnom Penh.Macroeconomic stability has returned to normal with confidence, but the level of dollarization has risen to more than 60 percent by the late 1990s and about 80 percent by the late 2000s.

Cambodia, Russia Boosting Effective Legal Cooperation

Phnom Penh, March 20, 2024 --Cambodia's Ministry of Justice and the Russian Embassy in Phnom Penh have agreed to establish a joint mechanism for more effective implementation of legal cooperation.The move was shared during a meeting between H.E. Koeut Rith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, and H.E. Anatoly Borovik, Ambassador of Russia to Cambodia, in Phnom Penh on Mar. 19.They also discussed the progress of bilateral relations between Cambodia and Russia on legislation, including the addition to the implementation of a treaty on the transfer of prisoners.Cambodia and Russia have entered into agreements on extradition and legal aid to promote comprehensive legal cooperation between the two countries.

Cambodian PM Says Youth Plays Core Role In National Development

A US$10 Million Hospital In Kandal Province Inaugurated

Phnom Penh, March 13, 2024 --Techo Sen Koh Thom Hospital, a US$10 million hospital in Kandal province, was officially inaugurated this morning by Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet.Located along the National Road 21 in Kampong Svay Krom village, Prek Thmey commune, Koh Thom district, this newly-built hospital is one of the regional hospitals in Cambodia, the Premier underlined at the inauguration ceremony.With this new achievement, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet believed that Kandal can now be a hub of the country’s development.“Most part of Techo International Airport is in Kandal, while the Funan Techo Canal – a mega waterway project – will also have some part in Kandal, and now there is Techo Sen Koh Thom Hospital,” he said.Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet took the opportunity to encourage all stakeholders to further enhance medical professionalism and better service provision for the public.According to H.E. Dr. Chheang Ra, Minister of Health, the construction of the 179-bed Techo Sen Koh Thom Hospital started on Jan. 7, 2022 and completed on June 20, 2023 on an area of 14,000 square metres.Equipped with up-to-date medical equipment, the hospital provides advanced medical services for local people in Kandal province as well as those in nearby provinces.

EU Continues Its Supports For Cambodia’s Access To Safe And Clean Water

Phnom Penh, March 13, 2024 ---The European Union (EU) will continue supporting Cambodia’s access to safe and clean water beyond Phnom Penh, pledging funding to the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phase 3.The commitment was made by H.E. Ms. Jutta Urpilainen, European Commissioner for International Partnerships during her visit, joined by H.E. Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, to the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant on Mar. 13.This facility stands as a flagship European investment under the EU's Global Gateway investment strategy. This investment has significantly improved access to clean water for over 2 million residents in Phnom Penh and Takhmao city.The visit was accompanied by H.E. Long Naro, Director General of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA), along with about 50 representatives from EU Member States, Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, and the PPWSA.Commissioner Urpilainen commended the strong partnership between the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the EU as a strong Team Europe, particularly in the water sector.She highlighted the importance of access to clean water as a fundamental human right and a critical element of sustainable development.“With the successful implementation of Bakheng Phases 1 and 2, the EU will continue supporting Cambodia’s access to safe and clean water beyond Phnom Penh. Through our continued engagement, I am proud to announce our commitment of US$13 million (12M EUR) grant funding to Bakheng Phase 3 in collaboration with our European partner, AFD,” Commissioner Urpilainen announced.The Bakheng Water Treatment Plant is a testament to our commitment to providing quality, safe, sustainable, and affordable water, essential for both household consumption and attracting investment, pivotal to Cambodia’s development, said H.E. Hem Vanndy.“We extend our appreciation to the EU and our esteemed development partners for their steadfast support in advancing Cambodia’s potable water sector,” he said.The Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phases 1 and 2, with a combined production capacity of 390,000 m3/day, have been a key milestone in Cambodia's water infrastructure development, ensuring access to portable water for millions of people.The project has also contributed to 170,000 new connections to the water supply network, including for disadvantaged households, and 25,000 connections to commercial establishments and factories.The Phase 3 expansion of the project represents another significant step forward in ensuring sustainable water infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for clean water in the capital and surrounding areas.The European Commissioner has selected Cambodia as the first country to visit in South East Asia. Her interaction with the Cambodian government, youth and civil society represents an opportunity to take stock of the long-standing cooperation between Europe and Cambodia and to launch new initiatives to promote investments in partnerships with the EU. 

PM Reaffirms Benefits Of Funan Techo Canal Project

Phnom Penh, March 12, 2024 --Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has reaffirmed the importance of Funan Techo Canal project, in reaction to some criticism against this project.During his inspection visit to the construction site of Techo International Airport in Kandal province this morning, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said the Funan Techo Canal project will provide high potential for the national development.“It will provide benefit for some 1.6 million people along the canal and generate many other benefits for the national development,” the Premier stressed.Samdech Thipadei Prime Minister said this new project will link the river system to the sea route under the BOT (build-operate-transfer) contract.The Funan Techo Canal project has been carefully studied by experts for the benefits of the nation, added Samdech Thipadei, reiterating the Royal Government’s commitment to building the canal to expand the waterway transport, which is more profitable for the economy.According to the project’s feasibility study which has already been completed, the construction of this waterway of 180 kilometres long and 100 metres wide upstream and 80 metres downstream with two navigation lanes would be launched at the end of 2024, take around four years to complete, and cost some US$1.7 billion.The canal will link Prek Takeo of Mekong River to the sea in Kep province crossing four provinces: Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep with a total of 1.6 million people living on either side of the waterway.

"PM Lauds Progress of Techo International Airport Project"

Kandal, March 12, 2024: Prime Minister Hun Manet announced his deep delight at the tremendous progress of the Techo International Airport project, which is praised as the biggest airport in Cambodia and a source of national pride.During the morning of March 12, 2024, PM expressed his excitement during an inspection ceremony for the first phase of the building of Techo International Airport.PM summed up the event by saying, "We could feel the excitement building as we drove from the ring road into the city and got closer to the location. Though not yet complete, the excitement is comparable to that on the eve of the opening of Angkor International Airport."As of February 21, 2024, Mr. Mao Havnall revealed that the 4F construction of Techo International Airport had reached roughly 66.1% of its initial phase of completion. Cambodia Exports 90,153 Tonnes Of Milled Rice In January-February

Phnom Penh, March 11, 2024 --Cambodia exported 90,153 tonnes of milled rice to international markets in the first two months of 2024, down 7.2 percent from 97,153 tonnes in the same period of 2023, said a report from the Cambodia Rice Federation.The country earned a total revenue of US$65.4 million from the rice export during the January-February period, a year-on-year decrease of 9.9 percent, it added.The Kingdom's rice was shipped to 50 countries and regions around the world by 40 exporters, stated the report.Exported milled rice varieties included premium aromatic rice, fragrant rice, long grain white rice, parboiled rice, and organic rice.Cambodia exported 51,333 tonnes of milled rice worth US$38.37 million to the EU market; 18,753 tonnes others to ASEAN members, generating a revenue of US$13.36 million; 11,083 tonnes to China, earning US$6.81 million, and 8,984 tonnes to other destinations, bagging US$6.90 million as revenue, the report pointed out.The Kingdom also earned US$395 million in revenue from cross-border traded paddy rice of some 1.37 million tonnes during the two-month period.In 2023, Cambodia exported more than 656,000 tonnes of milled rice worth US$466 million, marking a three percent growth in volume and 13 percent in value compared with 2022.The Cambodia Rice Federation has set an ambitious goal to export at least a million tonnes of milled rice by 2025.
