Phnom Penh, March 07, 2024 --

The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has congratulated and praised Cambodia's achievements as well as her active participation in the IPU framework, and believed that the Kingdom will continue on the right path to a better future for the people and the nation.

H.E. Ms. Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) of Tanzania and President of IPU, made the remarks in a bilateral meeting with Cambodian NA President, Samdech Moha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, in Paris on Mar. 6 afternoon, on the sidelines of the summit of female parliamentary speakers hosted by France.

On the occasion, both sides exchanged views on the regional and international situation, especially the relationship between Cambodia and Tanzania and the cooperation under the IPU framework. They also laid stress on the important role of parliamentary diplomacy in peacebuilding through conflict management and prevention.

The Cambodian NA president raised a five-point proposal to strengthen the bilateral and multilateral relations, including: (1) Strengthening cooperation to ensure the building and maintenance of peace and achievement of sustainable development goals, including the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment; (2) Strengthen the relationship between ASEAN and the African Union in the framework of government, parliament, the private sector and people-to-people relations. Cambodia and Tanzania could be a bridge between the two regions – Southeast Asia and Africa; (3) In the context of power struggles and international economic fragmentation, we must strengthen international cooperation through an open, inclusive and rules-based multilateral mechanism; (4) Examine opportunities for economic cooperation between the two countries, especially the green economy and digital economy; and (5) Strengthen cooperation on the digital parliament.

In reply, H.E. Ms. Tulia Ackson supported the proposal and pledged to tighten the cooperation between the two parliaments through the establishment of a friendship parliamentary group.

The Tanzanian parliament is happy to share more experiences on the development of a digital parliament, social security, as well as women's participation in politics, she said, stressing that women play a key role in finding a global solution.

Samdech Khuon Sudary has been leading her senior delegation for an official visit and participation in the summit of female parliamentary speakers from Mar. 2 to 11, and the gathering aims to promote and advocate for the rights and interests of women and girls globally.
