ASEAN Scientific Committee Promotes Fair And Reliable Use Of AI

The ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation has called for attention to a just and reliable use of Artificial Intelligence to reduce the risk of using this technology by all ASEAN member countries.

The Committee made the call at a workshop on "Capturing human-centered artificial intelligence technology" organized by the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation in collaboration with the Asia Foundation and the Intellectual Intelligence Institute on Humanities and Science of Stanford University. The event took place during the 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI-20), the 85th ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation and related meetings held in Siem Reap province, Cambodia from June 3 to 7, 2024.

The Workshop on "Capturing human-centered artificial intelligence technology” was chaired by H.E Hul Seangheng, Undersecretary of State, Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation and Chair of the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation with about 160 participants from ASEAN member countries and delegates of ASEAN-US scientists and technologists.

A statement from the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation said the discussions focused on emerging artificial intelligence technologies, including challenges, the need for AI tools and knowledge, and the development of policies and mechanisms for the effective use of AI.

Other key topics discussed included ensuring the fair and reliable use of AI, and strategies to maximize the benefits and mitigate the risks of using artificial intelligence for the benefit of all ASEAN member countries.
