The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, His Excellency Hun Manet, said that the first phase of the new deep-sea port will be officially built before the end of 2023 to ensure the docking of large container vessels in response to the increase in the volume of containers passing through this port now and in the future.

On the morning of November 7, 2023, Samdech Hun Manet said that during the meeting with more than 15,000 workers from factories and enterprises based in Cambodia Jeju Gurji Special Economic Zone, Preah Sihanouk Province, the Royal Government is upgrading its warehouses and preparing to build a new deep-sea port in Sihanoukville to allow large container vessels to dock.

Samdech Hun Manet continued that the foundation stone for the construction of the new deep-sea port was due to the fact that the current port of Sihanoukville is only 9 and a half meters deep, so all goods entering Cambodia by ship imported only 18% of the goods, making the shipping costly.

He said that if the first phase of the new deep-sea port is completed, it will be able to bring in 93% of container vessels, while only 7% will be left, thus reducing the cost of transport of about 400 containers per container from $ 500 to $ 200 per container. In addition, if the new deep-sea port is further developed in the second or third phase, then all ships can enter Cambodia, which will help create more jobs and boost the economy even more.

"Right now we are renovating a container site and a warehouse to accommodate another ship, but more importantly, we have worked with Japan and agreed with Japan to help in the construction, which we borrowed, plus Japanese technology to invest in the expansion of our deepwater port.

In the first phase of the port, I hope to hit the ground running before the end of the year. His Excellency Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, met with President Jaika yesterday. I assigned him to meet to encourage negotiations to end in a budget drop to start laying the groundwork for the first step in expanding our port.

"Our port expansion hopes to hit the ground running this year because it is an important year for Cambodia and Japan, the 70th anniversary of our relationship. I said to hit the ground before the end of the year, so he did it. I thank you, and we will work together."
