Phnom Penh, November 02, 2023 --

Sleng Fishway, an Australia-supported fishway in Kralanh district, Siem Reap province, was officially opened today, contributing to restoring fish migration and reconnecting healthy waterways between the Tonle Sap Lake and local communities.

The opening ceremony was presided over by H.E. Khun Savoeun, Secretary of State at the Ministry Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Australian Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Justin Whyatt with the participation of government officials, and villagers.

According to a news release of the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh this morning, the Sleng Fishway will benefit the environment and the social and economic wellbeing of local communities, who rely on fish for food and income.

The fishway is a critical solution to Cambodia's fisheries challenges, as hydropower and irrigation development are essential to economic growth but can also fragment waterways and disrupt fish migration, added the embassy.
