Kratie, February 03, 2025 --

Cambodia’s Minister of Information H.E. Neth Pheaktra, Head of the Royal Government Working Group for Kratie province, has called upon local communities and authorities to participate in the conservation of the Mekong River’s endangered Irrawaddy dolphins.

H.E. Minister made the appeal during his recent working visit to the province.

He emphasised that protecting these dolphins not only preserves biodiversity but also boosts local incomes through eco-tourism.

H.E. Minister highlighted that the Irrawaddy dolphin is a valuable natural heritage of Cambodia and the world. Currently, approximately 105 dolphins inhabit the Mekong River, mainly within Kratie and Stung Treng provinces. Among the key conservation sites is the Prek Kampi Dolphin Conservation Area in Chetr Borei district, a prime eco-tourism destination that attracts both local and international visitors, providing jobs and income for local communities.

Kratie province boasts several promising tourism destinations, including Prek Kampi Dolphin Pool in Chetr Borei district, Wat Sarsar 100 (100-pillar pagoda) in Sambor district, Koh Trong Community-Based Tourism Site in Kratie town, and the scenic Mekong Rapids in Kampi.

The province is also known for its unique local products, such baked sticky-rice in bamboo, Koh Trong pomelos, Pekuok (jicama), and various Mekong fish dishes that appeal to tourists.

The Head of the Royal Government Working Group for the above-mentioned province praised the efforts of the Kratie provincial administration, the Provincial Department of Tourism, local tourism communities, and community-based tourism groups for enhancing visitors’ services and hospitalities.

H.E. Neth Pheaktra also encouraged stakeholders to continue improving services, maintaining hygiene and safety, ensuring fair pricing, and promoting sustainable tourism to support local economic development.
