Cambodia Launches New Packaging Development Centre

Phnom Penh, December 10, 2024 —

On the occasion of its 60th anniversary on Dec. 9, the Royal University of Agriculture kick-started its packaging development center to promote the competitiveness and sustainability of Cambodia’s food industry.

The operation of the centre, made possible through the CAPFISH-Capture: Post-Harvest Fisheries Development project funded by the European Union (EU), will provide innovative and sustainable packing solutions to enhance food security and reduce waste in the industry.

Based on an assessment of the packaging in the agribusiness and food sector indicated pending challenges and growing demand for effective packaging solutions in the industry.

UNIDO senior technical adviser Seetharama Shetty Thombathu sees the establishment of the packaging development centre as a strategic response to the challenges faced by the local food business.

The main functions of the center include research and development, providing modern solutions tailored to the needs of local enterprises, and capacity building training to equip the necessary skills for efficient and sustainable packaging of food products.

The packaging development centre is run by the Royal University of Agriculture, which not only serves as a hub for business but also as a forum for students and researchers.

Rector of the Royal University of Agriculture H.E. Dr. Ngo Bunthan said that in addition to providing support to local enterprises, the centre will also provide better research opportunities for students and researchers at the university.
